University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Jazz Festival 2012
Saturday February 25, 2012 - ALL DAY - University of Minnesota
This letter is to inform you of the upcoming Jazz Festival at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities on Saturday February 25, 2012. Headlining the Annual U of M Twin Cities Jazz Festival will be the Hornheads!! This is just a day trip to the University and NO overnight stay is involved.
The Brooklyn Center Jazz Band will play for approximately 20 minutes in the world renowned Ted Mann Concert Hall and then be critiqued by clinicians for approximately 40 minutes. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to work with the very best clinicians as well as the chance for them to hear what other high school bands are doing. On Saturday evening, there is a performance by the guest artist and the U of M-Twin Cities Jazz Bands. This festival has been a very exciting festival in the past and very well attended.
Student Expenses
The school is paying for our entry fee and bus to the festival. However, students are responsible for bringing money to cover food and personal expenses.
Since we will be at the festival most of the day and evening, the students will be responsible for eating lunch before arriving to school, as no other food will be available to them before dinner. For dinner, we'll take a trip over to Dinkytown and eat at the world famous--Annie’s Parlor. After dinner, we’ll walk over to the Coffman Student Union for some fun in Goldy’s Game Room. There is bowling, pool tables, board games, and arcade games available at very reasonable prices. We will have our 9th Annual Gutterball Bowling Tournament – with fabulous prizes that are just waiting to be won.
It's hard to suggest a dollar amount that students should bring because eating and spending habits will vary, but I would suggest bringing $15-20 to cover dinner and entertainment expenses. Please plan ahead so your band director doesn't have to cover your meal expenses, because the band director doesn’t have money for that. Goldy’s Game Room activities are optional.
Clothing
Students will need to bring the following items:
Please arrive that day wearing your performance attire; there will be no time to change before we play.
Instrument and Accessories
Please be sure your instrument is in top playing condition. Please check your instrument at least one week prior to the festival to make sure it's working properly. Sax players please be sure to have a couple extra good reeds on hand. Drummers, please bring plenty of sticks and any auxiliary percussion you need. There will be a music box available for you to put your music in prior to departing for the festival.
Student Etiquette
You are a member of Brooklyn Center High School Jazz Band and a student representative of our community, school and music department. Your conduct is to be proper at all times. Always be polite, neat in appearance, punctual and sincere in your effort to contribute your best.
Whenever students are at a school sponsored activity, whether it is during the school day or outside of the school day, all policies from the Brooklyn Center Student Handbook remain in effect, including school policies related to possession of weapons, sexual harassment, use of possession of alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Please make wise choices and proudly represent our school in a most positive way.
Any misconduct that is considered to be serious in nature will result in the student being sent home immediately at the parents' expense.
Performance Site Etiquette
During the jazz festival, the students are expected to not only perform, but also to attend performances put on by other high school jazz bands. The following are some guidelines that should be followed at all times:
